The "Nikolai Quarter" is set on an island and surrounds the reconstructed "Nikolai Church", the oldest parish in town.
This quarter, rebuilt in 1981-89, presents an interesting synthesis of partly refurbished historic buildings and modern apartment houses. Noteworthy sights are the Ephraim-Palais, the "Garlic House", the tavern Zum Nußbaum, as well as the Gerichtslaube ("The Courtyard") of the medieval town hall of Berlin.
