Dresden Zoo was founded in 1861 right in the centre of Dresden. Big and small animal lovers can discover about 1,500 animals on about 13 hectares during a relaxed walk through the zoo. Lions, giraffes, meerkats, elephants, cattas, kangaroos, small pandas and penguins can be observed in modern facilities designed close to nature.
Absolutely worth seeing are our koalas in the Prof. Brandes house. The fascinating marsupials receive fresh eucalyptus every day at 09.30 a.m. and arrive on the scales at our animal keeper's meeting point on Wednesdays and Sundays at 11.00 a.m.. The Prof. Brandes house is also home to monkeys, two-fingered sloths, armadillos, various insects and Sunda-Gavial "De Gaulle" - a crocodile about 4.00 m long.
Children can experience a lot at Dresden Zoo. A slide leads down to the zoo below ground, in the petting zoo Cameroon sheep, mini pigs and the pantry full of mice are waiting to be discovered. There are exciting things to learn about the zoo dwellers at daily feeding meetings and our six adventure playgrounds offer plenty of space for romping and climbing.
