Hamburg State Opera

The Hamburg State Opera is one of the world's leading opera houses and looks back on a history of more than 300 years. In 1678, art-minded Hamburg citizens pushed through the establishment of a public opera house in the Senate, the first privately run opera house in Germany. Today, the house on Dammtorstrasse is home to the Hamburg State Opera, the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier and the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra.

Since the 2015/16 season, the Hamburg State Opera has been under the artistic direction of opera and orchestra director Georges Delnon and Hamburg's general music director and chief conductor of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Kent Nagano. Careful cultivation of a broad repertoire and a passion for the new characterize the house's repertoire.

The Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier is known far beyond the borders of the Hanseatic city. At its center is ballet director and chief choreographer John Neumeier, who has been artistic director of the company since 1973. He has also been the ballet's artistic director since 1996. In 2005 he was entrusted with the position of Managing Director of the Hamburg State Opera. In his works, he combines the tradition of classical ballet with modern, contemporary forms, creating a distinctive choreographic language.

The Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra has been shaping the sound of the Hanseatic city for more than 190 years. In addition to the Philharmonic Concerts at the Elbphilharmonie, the orchestra performs in almost all opera and ballet evenings at the Hamburg State Opera.
