Jever Castle

The origin of the castle goes back to a fortified castle existing since the Middle Ages. The old fortress was destroyed in the course of warfare during the 15th century and a new one was built. The castle built in the following period was the starting point for extensions by a four-winged castle surrounded by moats and renovation works in Renaissance style commissioned by Maria von Jever during the 16th century. The castle, with its 67-meter-high tower, is the town's landmark and is also found in the trademark of Jever Pilsener.
Since 1921, the castle's interiors have housed the Castle Museum. The permanent exhibition tells of the history of the site, the origins of the museum and the reign of the Jever. The collection includes a coin collection, high-quality ceramics and porcelain, the princely gallery, and clothing and castle inventory from three centuries. The undeniable highlight is the Renaissance wooden ceiling made of carved oak in the audience hall, which is still preserved in its original state.
Changing special exhibitions, lectures, concerts and other events round out the cultural offerings.
