Richard-Wagner-Platz

The Richard-Wagner-Platz obviously owes its name to the birthplace of the Leipzig composer Richard Wagner, which is very close by. In the 10th century, the town was home to the Slavic market from which the city of Leipzig developed. After many of the surrounding buildings were destroyed in an air raid during the Second World War - including the Old Theatre - the square expanded visually. In its irregular form, the square today is dominated by a narrow green area, the "tin can", a well-known shopping centre and a classicist residential and commercial building in the south, the "Großer Blumenberg". Another characteristic feature is the fountain of dandelions in the centre of the square.
