The area of the former island Grasbrook on which the harbour city is built was located in front of the gates of the town till the beginning of the 19th century The harbour city was declared to an own district of Hamburg in 2008. This district covers a total area of about 2.2 km ² and it is completely surrounded by river runs and canalruns. Residential units and jobs should originate on the area till the year 2020. The harbour city is the surface-biggest running town development project of Hamburg, with jobs and residential space being created here.
