Gendarmenmarkt

The Gendarmenmarkt ("Constable´s Square") was originally designed in 1688 as the center of Friedrichstadt, a former independent suburb named after the Prussian king Frederick I., and has since become one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

To the west, it features the Schauspielhaus (built in 1818-21 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel), functioning today as a concert hall. To the north and south, it is framed by the "French cathedral" and the "German cathedral".
