Shortly after Christmas, the colorfully filled doughnuts begin to pile up in Munich bakeries, a clear sign that Carnival is approaching. The carnival season officially begins on Epiphany (January 6) and ends on Shrove Tuesday.  This is the climax of the Munich carnival: On the Viktualienmarkt the mayor speaks, the prince and princess and the carnival guard say goodbye with their last performances - and thousands of people look forward to the dance of the market women. During the year, these women sell fruit and vegetables, fish, flowers, spices and fresh juices at their stalls. Now they whirl across the stage in brightly colored costumes so that the petticoat skirts and high hats just fly. Every year they start with the cult song "Linie 8", followed by newly rehearsed dances. A unique experience!

Starkbierfest - Strong Beer Festival
Nockherberg
Traditionally, strong beer is drunk in Bavaria during Lent between Ash Wednesday and Easter. So every year, March gets off to a very happy, convivial and Munich start, as the Paulaner brewery hosts its legendary Starkbierfest, which expresses the local attitude to life and is as much a part of the city as the Oktoberfest. People drink strong beer together while listening to brass music, talk a lot and have fun, simply enjoying life. Since time immemorial, the people of Munich have made a pilgrimage to the "Berg", or more precisely to the Nockherberg in Giesing, for this purpose during Lent. There are several festivals in and around the city - but this one is cult and the original. Because the Starkbier was invented on the Nockherberg and is called "Salvator" by the way. The highlight of the Starkbier festival is the Salvator rehearsal with the so-called Politiker-Derblecken in the form of a Lenten sermon and a singspiel.

Auer Dult - Maidult - May Fair
Mariahilfplatz
The Munich market with folk festival fun has a long tradition. As early as 1796, Elector Karl Theodor granted the suburb of Au the right to hold a fair twice a year. Originally, the name "tult" or "Dult" meant church festival. In the course of time, the word changed its meaning and has since stood for "fair".

At the Auer Dult, around 260 market traders and showmen* offer their wares and folk festival attractions. The Auer Dult is a tableware market and a large open-air department store in one. With a bit of luck, real treasures can be found among the junk, trinkets and curiosities.

Hauptsache - Hüte, Hauben, Hip-Hop-Caps - Main thing - hats, hoods, hip-hop caps
Bayerisches Nationalmuseum
Headgear was and is a means of communication of the first order: it serves self-expression, makes hierarchies visible, can unite groups, but also separate them from one another. The Bavarian National Museum presents around 300 hats, hoods, caps and much more from its rich collection. From the Middle Ages to the present, the cultural history of this "main thing" is illuminated under various aspects. In addition to the history of fashion, the special exhibition also focuses on social and economic contexts and explores a wide variety of materials and manufacturing techniques.
The focus is on the historical originals, commented on and explained by pictorial material in lavish abundance. Loans for the 20th and 21st centuries from important private collections as well as current models by milliners and hat artists complement the presentation. The special exhibition shows: headgear is a fashion statement, of unique diversity and simply beautiful!

Traditional maypole raising at the Viktualienmarkt
Viktualienmarkt
A Bavarian community without a maypole? Does not exist. Often even neighborhoods or large companies own their own tree. The painted and decorated trunks decorate the squares in front of the town hall, the church or other places in the village. If you want to be there when such a maypole is erected, join the many spectators at the Viktualienmarkt on May 1 in the morning, starting at around 10 a.m., as the Munich fire department raises the freshly painted and decorated landmark of the market. The maypole there has been donated by Munich's six major breweries for more than 50 years.

Backyard flea markets
in all parts of the city
For the curious and the sociable, Munich's backyard flea markets offer surprising and often wildly romantic glimpses into the gardens and estates of Munich's neighborhood residents. On weekends from May to October, all the neighborhoods are involved, from Giesing to Glockenbachviertel to Westend. Wherever colorful balloons hang from the facades, the best bargains are to be found in clothing, toys, household goods and antiques - the important thing is that what you're willing to part with also ends up in good hands! But even that often becomes a minor matter when the residents spontaneously invite you over for apple pie or a barbecue and strangers become acquaintances. A typical Munich togetherness!

Chinesischer Turm im Englischen Garten
In the middle of the English Garden, the dirndls turn here at six in the morning: At the traditional folk dance "Kocherlball" at the Chinese Tower, the sun and the heart rise at the same time. In the 19th century, simple cooks, errand boys, nannies and house servants met here to dance before work. Now, since 1989, thousands of people gather to twirl around with each other to waltzes, polkas, zwiefaches and Munich Française - gladly wearing old uniforms and bourgeois clothes from the 19th century. People also celebrate around it in the beer garden and picnic on the meadows.

Trachten- und Schützenzug

Through the Munich city center to the Theresienwiese
Of course, it's already tapped on Saturday. But for many Munich residents, the Oktoberfest doesn't begin until the following day, when the traditional costumes parade through the streets. The traditional traditional costume parade, the largest in the world, always takes place on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest. Around 9,000 people take part, including rifle and traditional costume clubs, marching bands and chapels from all over Europe. The Münchner Kindl rides at the head. Munich's mayor and Bavaria's prime minister roll past in festive carriages, and the breweries send their magnificent multi-horse-drawn carriages. The entire procession is about seven kilometers long and winds its way through the city center to the Theresienwiese. If you want to be in the front row as a spectator, you should get there early, as the crowds are huge, especially when the weather is nice. Alternatively, you can watch the parade on TV: Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcasts live. The traditional costume parade first took place in 1835, for the silver wedding anniversary of King Ludwig I and Therese of Bavaria - their wedding on October 12, 1810 is considered the origin of the Oktoberfest. Since 1949, the Trachtenumzug has been held annually.
