Husum

Husum has that North Sea feeling right in the middle of town. Even though Theodor Fontane literarily gave the city the reputation of being a "gray city by the sea" in 1851, visitors to Husum quickly realize how colorful and diverse the city actually is. Old gabled houses and narrow streets make up the charm of the harbor town. It is located directly on the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and, thanks to its direct access to the sea, invites visitors to take boat trips to the North Frisian Islands such as Sylt and Amrum, to the Halligen islands or the seal banks.
But also the city itself has a lot to offer and inspires with a diversity of history, culture, tradition and maritime flair. On the market square at the foot of St. Mary's Church and the old town hall still beats the heart of the city. Here you will also find the beloved landmark of the people of Husum: the Asmussen-Woldsen monument, affectionately known as the "Tine Fountain".

Beach Paradise

The most popular beach in the coastal city is Dockkoogspitze not far from the city center. The green bathing beach with DLRG supervision during the main season offers enough space to soak up the sun and energy. Beach chairs invite for extensive lazing and the fresh North Sea as well as nearby beach cafes provide cooling on hot summer days. The large children's playground provides plenty of room for little bathers to play and romp. For those who like a more active beach trip, the activity beach is the right place. It offers beach volleyball and basketball courts for exciting matches. Another beach section is specially designated for man's four-legged best friend. Despite the leash requirement, your faithful companion can really let off steam here. Sanitary facilities and changing rooms are available.
Lundbergsand in Simonsberg, located to the southwest, is very popular with families due to its quiet beach location and shallow access to the water.
Another popular destination is Husum Schobüll in the north of the port city. The undeniable highlight is a walk on the pier, which offers a magnificent view of the entire Husum Bay. Depending on the tide, it is wonderful to swim here or walk in the mudflats. A walk in the fresh sea air in the climatic health resort Husum is good at any time of the year!

Cultural diversity

Husum also has a lot to offer culture lovers. As Theodor Storm's hometown, the town is still closely associated with the lyricist. With his famous poem "The Town" (1851), he made an emotional declaration of love to the town, despite its seemingly dreary appearance. In the immediate vicinity of the market square stands the poet's birthplace, in front of which a memorial plaque commemorates the town's famous son. An old merchant's house from the 18th century near the harbor houses the Storm Museum. Among other things, the visitor can see the still preserved living room and the poet's parlor of the writer, who lived here from 1866 to 1880.
But also numerous other museums and music events are worth a visit. The NordseeMuseumHusum presents maritime treasures from the North Sea, finds from the mud flats, as well as much worth knowing about coastal protection, everyday life on the Halligen and North Frisian life culture. The Schiffahrtmuseum Nordfriesland offers interesting insights into seafaring, shipbuilding and coastal fishing.
Another undeniable highlight, especially from an architectural point of view, is the "Castle outside Husum". At the time of its construction, it was located outside the city limits and served as the residence of the Danish royal family during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is used as a cultural center and houses the castle museum, which shows the royal representation salons including furnishings and the castle chapel in a constant expansion of the collection. The impressive centerpiece is the Renaissance stucco ceiling from 1624. The extensive castle park attracts visitors with a purple sea of blossoms, especially in spring during the crocus bloom.
By the way, the best view of the city is from the nearby water tower. It once served as a water supply, but after being decommissioned and used as office space, it now offers its visitors a magnificent view over the city after 135 steps.

Highlights around the year

A special Husum highlight is the Husum Harbor Days in August and the Husum Shrimp Days in October along the harbor. The colorful town festival with a Ferris wheel, an arts and crafts market and gastronomic stands with culinary delights tempts visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the town.
