Friedrichstadt

Situated in the south of North Friesland, the tranquil "Dutch town" of Friedrichstadt is an excellent climatic health resort, a popular tourist attraction and an important cultural monument. It dates from the 17th century, from the Dutch Brick Renaissance period, and as a planned town follows the checkerboard pattern of town planning common at the time.
As a place of refuge for the religiously persecuted Remonstrants, the town was built by Dutch immigrants. They were given a place of refuge here. Today's Remonstrants Church still bears witness to the tolerant attitude of the city's founder and the importance of religious freedom in the city. It is the only place of worship of the Protestant Remonstrants outside the Netherlands. The late classicist building dates from 1854, after its predecessor was destroyed during the war.
The city was also intended to become an important trade center according to the ideas of Duke Friedrich III of Schleswig-Gottorf. Even though the port did not advance to the importance it once had, canals and artificial waterways created a unique city and the only German canal city. Thus, the cityscape is characterized by canals, boats and gabled houses. Four bridges shorten the ways over the canals and ditches.
The historic old town with its tranquil market square, home to the largest contiguous ensemble of gabled houses in Germany, with a Gothic-style fountain house in the center, exudes an atmosphere all its own. The panorama is a popular postcard motif and is considered a landmark of the Dutch town. The pedestrian zone in Prinzenstraße promises extensive shopping pleasure.
