Bremerhaven

The port city of Bremerhaven at the mouth of the Weser into the North Sea belongs as an exclave to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, but is located about 50 km north of it. It is considered the largest city on the German North Sea coast, lies in the middle of Lower Saxony's Wadden Sea National Park and is home to two overseas ports as a hub for the international import and export of goods.
With its waterfront location and maritime flair, the city is a worthwhile destination for travel and excursions. But the city has more to offer than the flourishing fishing port. "Fishtown", as the city is affectionately known, has developed into an important technology and knowledge center with the modern harbor district and the "Havenwelten" adventure world. The surrounding landscape is extremely charming and invites you to extensive hiking and biking tours.

Beaches

Of course, a visit to the beach is a must during a vacation at the North Sea - just a stone's throw away from the Havenwelten and the hustle and bustle of the big city is a maritime oasis of peace. A small sandy beach invites you to relax and watch the passing ships, and the traditional beach chairs are ideal for a sunny breather after an eventful exploration of the harbor district, and a water playground ensures that even the little ones feel comfortable and do not get bored. Changing rooms and sanitary facilities guarantee a comfortable stay. However, swimming in the Weser is not permitted for safety reasons.

Historical tour of the old town district Lehe

Lehe is the Wilhelminian quarter of Bremerhaven and is considered the origin of the port city. Information boards guide you through the history of the quarter, which can be explored on a historical tour ideal Lehe.
can be explored.
The first information board is located next to the bus stop on Ernst-Reuter-Platz. The circular route leads along St. Paul's Church, through the Goethe Quarter and along architectural monuments worth seeing. Despite destruction during the Second World War, there is tranquil architecture and imposing house facades from the 19th century to marvel at here.

Havenwelten

Anyone who wants to experience something in Bremerhaven is drawn to the Havenwelten. The world of experience in the New Harbor stands in direct contrast to the tranquil old town district of Lehe. After Bremerhaven's two ports increasingly lost their economic importance, the area was redeveloped and a new maritime center was created in the heart of the city. Here, living, tourism, leisure, culture, trade and commerce are intermingled.
The undeniable highlight is the ATLANTIC Hotel SAIL City with its observation deck, which offers a unique panoramic view of the harbor district. Architecturally very attractively designed and also an absolute must from a cultural point of view are the Klimahaus 8° Ost and the Deutsches Auswandererhaus. These are dedicated to perhaps the most significant topics of the 21st century: climate change and migration.
The Zoo am Meer, with its focus on Nordic aquatic species, is the smallest scientifically run zoo in Europe. It gives visitors insights into the world of polar bears, seals, arctic foxes, penguins and co. The North Sea Aquarium, as the origin of the zoo, always housed special marine animals in natural seawater.
The Mein Outlet & Shopping Center offers a shopping experience of a special kind, and all-round culinary delights from the sea round off the offer.

Cycling and hiking tours

The tranquil surrounding countryside of the port city invites to extensive cycling and hiking excursions. No matter whether you want to cycle along the idyllic banks of the Weser and Geeste, to the Devil's Moor or declare impressive lighthouses as the destination of your tour: numerous well-maintained cycle paths lead into the beautiful seaside town, through it and to destinations worth seeing.

Excursions and museums

A popular destination is the Bremerhaven lighthouse, the Loschenturm. As the oldest lighthouse on the North Sea mainland coast, the tower in the brick Gothic style is a listed building and is considered one of Bremerhaven's ultimate landmarks. It has been in operation as a rear light since 1852 to the present day. Inside the tower is the entrance lock to the New Harbor.
A harbor tour is also particularly worthwhile. The view from the water of the skyline of the modern port district with the Atlantic Hotel Sail City standing out is breathtaking, especially after dark.
The Wilhelm Bauer submarine is a special kind of technology museum. As the world's only surviving Type XXI submarine, which revolutionized submarine construction in 1943/44 in the midst of World War II, it is a technological and historical monument of international significance. It is located in the museum harbor opposite the German Maritime Museum. The latter is Germany's national maritime museum and portrays man's eventful relationship with the sea in an interactive experience exhibition.
