Altes Museum

Located as part of the building ensemble on Museum Island, the Altes Museum (Old Museum) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the National Museums in Berlin. It is bordered by the Berlin Cathedral to the east, the newly rebuilt Berlin Palace to the south and the Zeughaus to the west. Built during the 1820s, the building is one of the most important structures of classicism. Among the architectural features of the building are the open staircase and the rotunda inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. It is surrounded by a gallery supported by twenty Corinthian columns. Elements that until then had been reserved for stately buildings.
The museum houses the Berlin collection of antiquities and part of the coin cabinet. The exhibits range from ancient art and archaeological treasures of Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Cypriot origin to sculptures, vases and bronzes.
