Basel - City of Museums

Basel is considered a city of museums - with a large number of renowned houses of international standing such as the Fondation Beyeler, the Art Museum or the Museum Tinguely, it attracts visitors from near and far. The focus of Basel's museum landscape is on the visual arts - over a dozen museums portray a broad spectrum ranging from antiquity to the present day. Attention is paid not only to historically established works, but also to pioneering art. In addition, Basel is also home to very special museum institutions such as the Spielzeug Welten Museum, which grew out of a private teddy bear collection.

Pharmacy Museum of Basel University

The Pharmacy Museum of the University of Basel houses one of the most important collections on the history of pharmacy and provides a comprehensive insight into the development of remedies. The foundation of the collection goes back to its original function as a collection of scientific studies and documents dating back to the 1920s, after it was given to the university as a private collection by the pharmacist and lecturer in practical pharmacy and the history of pharmacy, Josef Anton Häfliger.
A broad cross-section shows formerly used drugs and portrays ideas of disease and healing concepts in the course of time. The historical development is also illustrated by three pharmacy facilities from different eras: A richly decorated court pharmacy from around 1755, a pharmacy in the Empire style from around 1820 and the furniture of the industrially influenced Basel Barfüsser Pharmacy from around 1900 are directly compared with each other. The latter now forms the entrance and museum store. Magnificent pharmaceutical ceramics, scales and weights, entire laboratories and herbal books are also part of the museum's holdings.
