Hohenzollern Castle

Hohenzollern Castle is located south of Tübingen and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Swabian Alb and the ancestral seat of the Prussian kings. But a trip to the Black Forest is definitely worthwhile: "The view from Hohenzollern Castle is truly worth the long journey", as Emperor Wilhelm II already knew.
On the ruins of older castles, some of which date back to the 11th century, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the Hohenzollern family castle rebuilt between 1850 and 1867. In accordance with the desire for representation of the rulers of Prussia, the ancestral castle is the symbol of the romantic architecture nd the ideal of a medieval knight's castle of that time.
Even from a distance, the imposing appearance of the peak castle on the 855-meter high, isolated mountain cone of the Hohenzollern becomes clear. The magnificent building covers almost the entire mountaintop and consists mainly of four elements: The fortifications, the castle building, the chapels and the castle garden. The entrance is formed by the impressive eagle's gate with the drawbridge. The castle building is surrounded by several bastions and four turns. A magnificent flight of steps leads into the interior and first into the family tree hall of the Hohenzollern family. Also worth seeing are the Count's Hall and the Treasury, in which, in addition to the Prussian royal crown, numerous memorabilia of personalities of the House of Hohenzollern can be found.
