Donauquelle (Donaueschingen)

The world-famous source of the Danube in the castle park in Donaueschingen is a beautiful excursion destination and a great starting point of the Danube cycle path at the edge of the southern Black Forest, as this is where the 2,800 km long Danube begins. The spring is located between the baroque town church St. Johann and the princely Fürstenberg castle and is extremely stylishly designed. The source basin is framed by a circular frame decorated with ornaments. The sculpture "Mother Baar" (1896, Adolf Heer) is enthroned above the spring pot, showing the "young Danube" its way to the Black Sea.
The spring is created from rainwater that has seeped into the earth in the Black Forest and flows underground to the edge of the mountains, bubbling out of the earth in a fascinating way at precisely that point. Enjoy the work of nature and be enchanted by the way the rising water bubbles make their long journey to the Black Sea. First they make their way underground through the Danube stream to the Brigach, where they come back to daylight 100 meters away at the Danube Temple. From here, the Danube can be perceived as a river.
A well-known custom is dedicated to personal wishes: to make them come true, visitors throw a coin over their shoulder into the spring. After the tour, the beautiful castle park invites visitors to take long walks.
