Black Forest National Park

"Nature always creates the best of what is possible." - Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.), Greek philosopher and scholar, already had this insight and he was to be right. Because the importance of nature and species protection is more topical than ever.
Since 2014, the nature reserve of the Black Forest National Park between Baden-Baden and Freudenstatt has placed 0.7% of Baden-Württemberg's forest area under special protection. It extends over a total of 10,000 hectares in the main ridge of the northern Black Forest. Since man has been exploiting the forest for centuries since the first settlements in the Black Forest began in the 5th century, and the forests have suffered increasingly due to the high demand for wood by numerous craftsmen, nature conservation has top priority here. Thus man must not interfere with the natural dynamics of the forest and nature must be allowed to develop freely.
Step by step, animals and plants are re-conquering their habitat after years of clearing and agricultural use of the land. And the park has a rich flora and fauna to offer, which together show several superlatives: from the most poisonous inhabitant, the adder, to the peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the world, to the pygmy owl, at 16-19 cm the smallest owl in Europe.
The park offers a variety of leisure activities - signposted hiking trails and adventure paths give plenty of room to explore the unspoiled nature in peace and quiet. With an average snow height of 60-70 cm per year in the region, winter fun on cross-country trails and snowshoe paths is naturally also provided for.

Lothar trail

On the Lothar Trail you will learn how the forest develops after a storm without human intervention and how it is reborn under its own power. The tour leads over footbridges and ladders and takes about 30 minutes. A viewing platform offers magnificent views of the surrounding ridges of the northern Black Forest mountains.

Lynx trail

The 4.5 km long nature trail starts in the lynx hut and offers a lot of interesting facts about the sublime predator at numerous adventure stations. In three hours you will hike through the forest on creeping paths, which would also please the lynx.

Wild trail

This path leads through the middle of the wild forest and has some surprises in store after a storm. For a distance of 6 km it goes over fallen tree trunks and under them. Experience up close how the forest unfolds freely since hurricane "Lothar" and new life sprouts.
