The airport Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden is located on the area of the industrial park Baden-Airpark. It is located southwest of Karlsruhe and west of Baden-Baden. With an annual passenger volume of almost 1.5 million, it is the second largest commercial airport in Baden-Württemberg.
It was originally built in 1951 during the Cold War as a military airfield for the French Armed Forces, but was handed over to the Canadian military for use even before completion. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the withdrawal of the Allied Forces, the base was disbanded and efforts were made to make it suitable for civilian use. Since 1997 the airport has been connected to international air traffic and is a central traffic hub in the region.
