Alter Markt Potsdam

The Old Market is the historic city centre of Potsdam. Located in the heart of the old town, it is bordered by the Nikolai Church, the Old Town Hall, the Barberini Palace, the Potsdam City Palace with the Fortuna Portal as the entrance to the building used as the state parliament.
In the middle of the square is also the 25-metre-high marble obelisk based on the Roman model - it marks the intersection of the axes of the Old Town Hall, the Barberini Palace and the Baroque predecessor of the Nikolai Church.

During the 19th century, the square reached as far as the formerly built water edge on the Alte Fahrt and was one of the most beautiful squares in Europe according to contemporaries of the time. After the devastating destruction of the Second World War, this was to be paid tribute to again. After the night of bombing on April 14, 1945, only four buildings of the historical ensemble could be preserved. The remaining ruins were demolished and reconstructed as true to the original as possible. Among them are the Palazzo Barberini, which was built at the behest of the Prussian King Frederick II on the model of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, where the Barberini Museum is located today, and the new building of the State Parliament, which was reconstructed on the model of the historic city palace.
