Topf & Sons – Builders of the Auschwitz Ovens

The Topf & Sons Place of Remembrance is a place that may not appear directly on the itinerary of every visitor to the city, but it is worth a visit. The company Topf & Sons was founded in 1878 and built various fire installations. From 1939, the company began to build corpse incinerators specially designed for concentration camps for the SS and supplied the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp with them. Therefore, the place of remembrance also has the suffix "The stove builders of Auschwitz." After the war, the ovens were dismantled and the company itself went to Mainz. The buildings in Erfurt were used by various VEBs (Volkseigener Betriebe) in the GDR and were closed after reunification. In 1999, a support group was founded which was committed to reappraising the history and using the old factory premises as a memorial. After several years of preparations, negotiations and conversions, the memorial was finally opened in 2011. Since then, visitors have been able to view the grounds, the permanent exhibitions "Technicians of the Final Solution. The Furnace Builders of Auschwitz", as well as "Jewish Neighbours in Thuringia". Regular special exhibitions and touring exhibitions invite you to explore. The entrance is free.
