Heidelberg Central Station

The first Heidelberg train station was built as early as 1840, close to Heidelberg's old town as a terminus station. In 1862 the station was gradually converted to a through station, but this led to urban planning problems.
At the beginning of the 20th century, these problems and the lack of possibilities for expansion led to the decision to move the station about one kilometre to the west and to build it as a through station.
Interrupted by the two world wars, the relocation took about 50 years and the station building was not inaugurated until 1955.
Even today it is still considered one of the most beautiful and architecturally interesting new buildings of the German Federal Railways. The station has been a listed building since 1972.
Today the station houses cafés, restaurants and various shopping facilities.
