As one of the most famous ruins in Germany and a landmark of the city of Heidelberg, Heidelberg Palace is a popular destination for excursions. It is enthroned above the city and was the residence of the Palatinate Electors until it was destroyed in 1689 by soldiers of Louis XIV during the War of Palatinate Succession.
The restoration of the castle began in 1693 but was abandoned in 1764 after a fire caused by lightning.
The palace was built of Neckar valley sandstone and dominates the image of the old town.
