New Palace Stuttgart

The former residence of the Württemberg dukes and kings impresses with its splendour on the Schlossplatz, right in the heart of the city and in the immediate vicinity of the Old Palace. Since the Old Palace in Renaissance style was no longer to the liking of the new Duke Carl Eugen, he commissioned the New Palace after some disputes with the City Assembly.
After 60 years of construction, the building was finally completed in 1807. In the course of the 19th century the castle had several inhabitants before it was converted into an art museum at the end of the First World War. It also largely survived the destructive power of the Second World War, until shortly before its end it was almost completely destroyed by air raids. After a comprehensive restoration in the post-war years, the castle now serves as the seat of the Ministry of Finance and Culture, so unfortunately it is only accessible to visitors from outside. However, regular special guided tours occasionally allow a glimpse into the interior of the magnificent building.
