The Golden Horseman represents the Saxon Elector and Polish King August the Strong and has decorated the Neustädter Markt since 1736. The equestrian statue, which is made of copper, was made by Ludwig Wiedemann after a model by Jean Joseph Vinache and is refined with gold leaf. It depicts the ruler in a proud pose and Roman armour riding east towards the kingdom of Poland. He and his son played a decisive role in the creation of the magnificent baroque buildings and impressive art collections in Dresden, which for these reasons has also made a name as the "Florence on the Elbe".
