Leibnizhaus

The Leibnizhaus was built in 1499 in Renaissance style and was initially a town house in Hanover. It is named after its probably most famous inhabitant - the philosopher and director of the ducal library Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The Hanover elector had rented the town house for him to house the court library together with his librarian, advisor and ancestor researcher. The scholar lived here until his death in 1716.
Until an air raid struck the building during the Second World War, the Leibnizhaus was considered the oldest and most beautiful house in Hanover. However, it was completely destroyed by bomb explosions and only rebuilt elsewhere in 1983; on the Holzmarkt next to the Historical Museum with its original façade. The new building also features sections from biblical and ancient stories. In its present function, the building in the heart of the historic old town serves as a conference house for the university and other Hanoverian universities.
