Königsallee (KÖ)

The Königsallee is a splendid example of a shopping street - located in the heart of Düsseldorf's city centre, the "Kö", as it is affectionately called by the people of Düsseldorf, lives up to its reputation as an exclusive shopping boulevard. Pretty boutiques, elegant jewellers, renowned luxury brands and imposing shopping malls line up here.
Lined by countless chestnut trees, you can stroll along the moat, through which the water of the Düssel flows, and numerous restaurants and cafes tempt you to linger.

At the southern end of Königsallee, a monument was erected to Düsseldorf's coat of arms in 1963 to mark the city's 675th anniversary: the Bergische Löwe with a bronze anchor stands at Graf-Adolf-Platz. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the moat. The place is ideally suited as a starting point for an extended shopping trip along the popular boulevard.
And the Kö also has a lot to offer in terms of architecture: from Art Nouveau to Postmodernism, there are a number of historical features to marvel at.

Ever heard of it?
The chestnut trees that still line the banks of the moat to the right and left were the original eponym of today's boulevard: until the middle of the 19th century the Kö was still called "Kastanienallee". But when in 1848 - at the time of the revolutionary activities - King Frederick William IV of Prussia came to peaceful Duesseldorf, the monarch was received by an angry crowd on his way through the city. The people were furious about the Prussian decrees, which they felt were unjust, and threw horsewings at their outraged majesty. In order to appease the king again, the city fathers renamed the Scandal Street Königsallee "Kings' Avenue" in 1851 in honour of the head of state.
