Großer Garten

The splendour of baroque

The Grosser Garten, virtually unchanged through the centuries, invites you to experience the stunning beauty of the flower bed layout interspersed with water cascades and an array of fountains as you meander your way through this spectacular setting. The Electress Sophie spoke of passionate love for the garden with the words „this garden is my life“. She oversaw the development of the garden between 1679 and 1714. The Palace, formerly summer residence of the Royal House of Hanover, was destroyed during the Second World War. It has been rebuilt in 2013 and houses a Congress Centre and museum. The architectural centre point of the gardens has been recreated to its former glory. The beautiful Galerie ballroom with its fresco paintings and the unique hedge garden theatre are witness to the glamorous court life in former days. An interpretation of art in the modern age is the Grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle. With sculptures and mosaics of glass and pebble stones the French artist has created a work of art, housed in three rooms, a place rich in colour and exuding happiness and joy.
