Staatsoper Unter den Linden

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden looks back on an almost 280-
year history marked by many changes. After its renovation was
completed in 2017, the acoustics of the magnificent opera house
in the heart of Berlin were significantly improved and it is now
equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology. There, visitors
can experience a broad repertoire of operas and concerts with
top-class conductors and internationally renowned singers and
soloists. Onstage, the repertoire includes historically informed
baroque opera, major works from the classical, romantic and
modern period, world premieres and compositions that explore
alternative and experimental forms of opera. The unique artistic
tradition of the Staatsoper was shaped by personalities such as
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Strauss, Erich Kleiber, Otto
Klemperer and Otmar Suitner. The Berlin Staatskapelle, which is
over 450 years old, has been connected to the institution from the
very beginning. For more than three decades, from 1992 to 2023,
Daniel Barenboim shaped its musical excellence as General Music
Director. His successor will be Christian Thielemann who will take
on this position in 2024.
