The historic Mädler Passage is an impressive shopping mall in Leipzig's city centre. The Auerbachs Hof building complex used to be on the site. When it was sold to the leather manufacturer Anton Mädler, he had all the buildings demolished and built the Mädler-Passage trade fair building between 1912 and 1914. Only the cellar vaults used for serving wine and the "Auerbachs Keller", made famous by Goethe's work "Faust", were preserved.
Today, the retail complex, one of the most magnificent shopping arcades in the city of Leipzig, is a wonderful place to stroll with several small shops, and numerous restaurants invite you to linger. The upper storeys no longer serve their once intended purpose as a trade fair location, but function as office space and for the purposes of the cabaret Sanftwut.
