40 hectares of natural paradise within a conservation area known as Isar Meadows (Isarauen) along the river offer memorable experiences for animal lovers, big and small: Asian elephants, kangaroos, chimpanzees, giant Aldabra tortoises, elk and lion - at Hellabrunn visitors can discover and spend time up close with animals from around the world. From diving penguins to curious giraffes, romping polar bears to gorillas, often all that separates the visitor is the glass of the enclosure. These up-close (almost) encounters guarantee an unforgettable experience.
Founded in 1911, Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich is one of the most respected scientifically operated zoos in Europe. Established as the first geo-zoo in the world, the animal habitats have been organised according to continent since 1928. A walk through Hellabrunn is like a journey through exciting animal kingdoms from the Arctic to Africa, Europe to Asia and the Americas to Australia. The animals at Hellabrunn live in natural habitats just as in their native country, with spacious facilities. For example: the African Giraffe Savannah enclosure opened at Hellabrunn Zoo in 2013 provides a 10,000m² habitat for the zoo's giraffes, meerkats and porcupines.
