Heinrich Heine is the most famous child of the Rhine metropolis. With his work as a poet, writer and journalist in the 19th century, he is regarded as one of the last representatives and conquerors of the literary epoch of the Romantic era. He was born in the rear building at Bolkerstraße 53 in 1797 and made a significant contribution to the development of literature in Germany throughout his life. In order to create a worthy memorial to him, the Heine Haus was established as a centre for literature. Since then it has been dedicated to the promotion of contemporary literature and has established itself as a cultural institution in the middle of Düsseldorf's old town. In the front area of the house is the literary shop Müller & Böhm, in the rear part an event room with a literature café was established. Here, events with writers and authors, poets, musicians and critics take place regularly.
