Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche

The city church in western Berlin. Consecrated in 1895, the Romanesque building was destroyed in 1943. The ruined tower was preserved as the centrepiece of Egon Eiermann's ensemble of geometrically shaped structures with their distinctive blue-glazed walls, consecrated in 1961. Today, the tower and the Hall of Remenbrance wih the Cross of Nails from Coventry are a monument to peace and reconciliation.

Guided tours and church services

Visitor Information and guided tours

There are daily church tours of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

The tours include the Memorial Hall in the Old Tower and the New Church. They focus on the eventful history of the original Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church from 1895, its destruction in World War II, and Egon Eiermann's church ensemble from 1961. In doing so, the tours provide insight into both the historical context of the old memorial building and the current significance of the memorial hall. The focus here is on the history of the building's origins and its understanding as a place of silence, peace and reconciliation in the middle of the bustling city.

The tours last about 30 minutes and are free of charge. A donation to support the preservation of the buildings on the church podium is requested at the end of the tour.

The meeting point is in the Memorial Hall in the Old Tower. At the specified times, the tour will be called there.

In addition to the regular tour times, it is possible to book group tours with a special program. The tours are offered in German, English, French and Croatian. For a group tour there is a charge of 10,00 Euro p.p. (reduced rate 8,00 Euro p.p.). For group bookings and further information please contact:

Church services and prayers

Sundays ten o'clock
The classic Protestant service, always with celebration of Holy Communion.

In addition to the pastors of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Berlin General Superintendent Ulrike Trautwein preaches regularly, as well as Bishop Christain Stäblein on high feasts and special occasions. Other interesting preachers from the city also gladly accept the invitation to the pulpit at Breitscheidplatz.
At the large Schuke organ, the congregation's cantor, church music director Helmut Hoeft, church musician Jonas Sandmeier, regional church music director Prof. Dr. Gunter Kennel, and the titular organist at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Prof. Wolfgang Seifen, take turns. The Kantorei and the Bach Choir, the State and Cathedral Choir, the Community Choir, and frequently guest ensembles give the services a special musical glow.

During a musically accompanied prayer of intercession, candles can be lit in the sanctuary.
