State Museum of Egyptian Art

The State Museum of Egyptian Art, in short SMÄK, though by far not one of the largest collections of Ancient Egyptian artefacts, has attained worldwide renown for the quality of its pieces, particularly in the area of sculpture. Many of the objects on display are internationally recognized masterpieces and are much solicited as loans for temporary exhibitions around the world. The new building from 2013 in the centre of Munich’s Kunstareal now proudly stands as one of the few museum building in the world outside of Egypt to be devoted entirely to Ancient Egyptian artefacts.Rather than presenting a baffling array of rooms stuffed to the brim with Egyptian artwork, all within an even larger complex, the Munich museum offers respite from sensory overload with a more compact exhibition. Visitors can leave with a clearer understanding of the 5000 years of art and culture that make up Egypt’s fascinating history, and all within a more manageable time frame.
