1 Museum Starnberger See

Museum Lake Starnberg

The Museum Starnberger See is a city museum, local history museum and shipping museum all in one.

At the end of the visit, the only unanswered question is how the huge ship got inside the museum. Or whether the museum was built around the ship. Otherwise, the Museum Starnberger See gives full insight into the amazing cultural history of the region. Through unique exhibits, you can learn all about the exciting history of shipping on the lake and gain many vivid insights into what life in the region used to be like.

2 Votivkapelle / Schloss Berg

Votive chapel and memorial cross

Accident? Murder? Suicide? To this day, numerous myths and conspiracy theories surround the death of King Ludwig II. The memorial for the fairy tale king who drowned here is worth a visit in any case. After a short hike through Schlosspark Berg/ Berg Castle Park, you reach the votive chapel, which towers impressively above the lake. In the water, a large wooden cross marks the spot where Ludwig was found.
From Berg Castle, a beautiful walkway leads through the castle park to the chapel.

3 Bismarckturm

The imposing, 30-meter high Bismarck monument in Assenhausen is a perfect hiking destination.
A short walk from Assenhausen is this imposing stone monument to Otto von Bismarck.

4 Buchheim Museum

Buchheim Museum der Phantasie (of the Imagination)

Magnificent nature and impressive architecture as a setting for a unique expressionist collection. Everything about this museum is actually unique. From the uniquely beautiful location directly on the shore of the lake and the possibility to get there by museum boat, to the impressive architecture with a footbridge floating twelve meters above the lake, to the collections on display, which will inspire even the less art-interested and children. For in addition to its famous expressionist collection, the museum also displays a folkloristic collection and a variety of special exhibitions. And even offers unique art enjoyment while walking through the huge park.

5 Ilkahöhe

Ilkahöhe

Restaurant, beer garden and sensational panoramic view of the lake and the Alps. The Ilkahöhe is undisputedly one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Lake Starnberg. As an ideal hiking destination, it offers a breathtaking view across the lake to the Alpine panorama. And because you don't get your fill from the view alone, there is also a beer garden and a restaurant with a terrace.

6 Roseninsel

Roseninsel / Rose Island

"Museum Island" with a magnificent rose garden, UNESCO World Heritage Site and a large portion of Ludwig and Sisi. Anyone who sees the small island, which is about 170 meters from the western shore of the lake, for the first time will immediately understand why King Ludwig and Empress Sisi chose it as their retreat. The idyllic park and the magnificent rose garden do not only fascinate romantics and Sisi fans. From May 1 to October 15, you can be ferried across, enjoy the scent of over 2,000 rose bushes and visit the casino where once Ludwig and Sisi once resided.

From the parking lot at the Feldafing lido, a path leads to the "Glockensteg", where you ring a bell for the ferryman.

7 Schloss Possenhofen

Schloss Possenhofen / Possenhofen Castle

The castle where Empress Sisi spent her childhood still offers a magnificent sight in its old age. The "Sisi Castle" is unfortunately no longer open to the public but still offers a magnificent sight from the castle park.
