Gewandhaus zu Leipzig

The Gewandhaus is the seat of the traditional Gewandhaus Orchestra. More than 275 years of orchestra history form the exclusive setting for over 600 events every year with more than half a million visitors. The Gewandhaus organizes about 250 classical concerts per season: "Große Concerte" with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, chamber music, choir and organ concerts, music festivals and many more. The Gewandhaus' own programme is rounded off by a wide range of music education projects.
The excellent acoustics of the Great Hall have set standards worldwide and don't need to fear comparison with younger concert halls in the world. The sound conditions meet the high demands of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which has been based here since 1981. The Great Hall, built in steeply rising terraces, offers the best visibility from each of the 1,900 seats. The Small Hall with 498 seats was also converted into the Mendelssohn Hall in 1997 by the Gewandhaus architect Rudolf Skoda; it is mainly used for chamber music. The Gewandhaus was the first and only new construction of a pure concert hall in the GDR for which Kurt Masur laid the foundation stone in 1977.
Located in the centre of Leipzig, the Gewandhaus can be reached quickly on foot from any point in the city.
