The Greetsiel twin mills and their history

"DE MÖHLENS UN SCHÜTTEN VAN GREET"

The twin mills at the entrance to the East Frisian fishing village of Greetsiel are perhaps the most famous mills in East Frisia.

In 1856, the green twin mill was built. In 1921, the master miller Gerhard Schoof bought this mill and operated it commercially until 1964 and for his own needs until 1972. The operation then had to be discontinued in the fall of the same year. A violent storm caused a wing breakage and shut down the windmill. It served as a storage room for several more years. In 1975, the mill was sold to the then district of Norden.
In 1976, the broken wing could be repaired in cooperation with the "Association for the Preservation of the Greetsiel Twin Mills", which also existed since 1975. Furthermore, a tea room with art gallery was established in the two lower floors of the windmill.

At the end of 2013, a hurricane tore off the cap with the wings of the mill, the gallery and parts of the masonry were also damaged. In June 2015, thanks to many donations, the mill was reopened.
Today, the green mill still houses a small tea room where you can enjoy tea specialties and delicious cakes.

Already in 1706 the red twin mill was built. In 1921, the present two-story gallery bollard with wind rose was built on the old substructure. The mill still serves its full purpose today. It can grind with wind and motor power. The mill store sells fresh mill bread daily and a wide range of organic whole foods. In the red twin mill, visitors will find a café in the granary, from which the old Greetsiel sieltief can be admired. Currently, the red twin mill does not bear leaves due to maintenance work.

Harbour Greetsiel

"DE GRANAATFISKERS UN HÖRS KUTTERS"

Enjoy healthy North Sea air and experience history and seafaring romance in a unique setting of charming historic gabled houses and idyllic alleys.

Greetsiel is home to the largest fleet of cutters in East Frisia, with 25 crab cutters regularly calling at the picturesque harbor in the fishing village of Greetsiel. The cutters catch North Sea crabs, also called "garnet", in addition to smaller quantities of flatfish such as plaice, plaice and sole. The adult small crustaceans grow up to 9 cm long. The natural coloration of the garnet is transparent milky-gray. The animals can adapt their color to the seabed on which they live. Only when cooked, while still on the cutter, do they take on their typical reddish color. The historic harbor is now over 600 years old.
