The Marienplatz, located in the heart of the city, is an optimal starting point to get to know Munich. In 1854, this square was named after the “Mariensäule”, a Marian column that stands in the middle of it.
The best view of the “Marienplatz” and the historic centre is from the 50-metre high tower of the parish church of Saint Peter, commonly known as „Alter Peter“ (Old Peter).
Every December, a traditional Christmas market takes place in the “Marienplatz” – a must-see for all visitors. And, if you’re into football, know that Bayern Munich also celebrates its victories here!
