The extensive Schleißheim palace complex comprises three palaces: the Old Palace, the electoral hunting lodge Lustheim and the magnificent New Schleißheim Palace.
In the New Palace the furnishings of the banqueting halls and state apartments, in which important artists were involved, enjoy art-historical rank. The ceiling frescoes were created by the Venetian Jacopo Amigoni and the Bavarian artist Cosmas Damian Asam, the stucco decorations by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The imposing ceremonial sequence of rooms consisting of the Grand Staircase, the Banqueting Hall, the Victoria Hall and the Great Gallery, as well as the parade apartments of the electoral couple, with their sumptuous decoration and furnishings, still rank today among the most important room furnishings of Baroque palace architecture. In the state rooms of the palace, the Bavarian State Painting Collections present masterpieces of European Baroque painting.
The Old Palace, begun in 1598 as a hermitage, was rebuilt in 1617 by Maximilian I. with a sophisticated
Maximilian I. by a sophisticated new building modeled on modern Upper Italian villa architecture.
Lustheim Palace, which houses a famous collection of Meissen porcelain, rises as a focal point at the end of the palace park.
The palace park with its magnificent parterre with ornamental flower beds, sculptures and water features is one of the few gardens of the Baroque period that has hardly been altered.
