Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz exudes a touch of Italy.

From the classicist Feldherrnhalle you have a great view over Odeonsplatz and Ludwigsstraße. The Feldherrenhalle, built in 1844, is a replica of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. On the other side of the street, Munich's oldest coffee house "Café Tambosi" invites you to sit on its terrace and enjoy a wonderful view of Odeonsplatz.

The yellow Theatinerkirche can be seen from far away, it was built in the Italian late baroque style in the 17th century. Also on Odeonsplatz is Germany's largest inner-city palace: the Munich Residenz. Adjacent is the Hofgarten, an oasis of calm between the Residenz and the Bavarian State Chancellery. There you can play boules, enjoy the sun, relax and go for a walk.

Theatinerchurch (St. Kajetan)

The Theatiner Church was built on the basis of a vow and in gratitude for the longed-for heir to the throne Max Emanuel (1662-1726) by his parents, Elector Ferdinand Maria (1636-1679) and his wife Henriette Adelaide (1636-1676), in the years 1663-1688 (the towers 1676-1690, the facade 1765-1768).

It is called the Theatine Church because its patron, St. Cajetan of Thiene (1480-1547), founded with some other priests the Theatine Order, which took care of the church until 1801.

It is called Collegiate Church because in 1838 King Ludwig I (1786-1868) established the Collegiate Chapter of St. Cajetan, an association of secular priests who served the church until 1953.

Since January 1, 1954, it has been entrusted to the Dominican Province of St. Albert of Southern Germany and Austria for pastoral care.

A total of 49 members of the ruling family are buried in the Fürstengruft, including four electors, three kings, Prince Regent Luitpold and Emperor Karl VII.
