Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport is the new, modern capital city airport, which opened in October 2020. It replaces the international airport Tegel since its closure and expands Schönefeld Airport in the south of Berlin under a new name. The entire original airport became BER Terminal 5 overnight.
With its long construction history, which began with the ground-breaking ceremony in 2006, it is one of the largest construction projects in Germany and achieved sad fame long before the originally planned opening in 2011. Due to inadequate construction planning and far-reaching technical shortcomings, the airport reaped mockery after the opening date was postponed seven times in total.
After overcoming various controversies and delays and nine years after the planned opening, BER is the new gateway to the cosmopolitan city of Berlin.
