Petersberg Citadel

The historic citadel on the Petersberg joins the numerous historic buildings such as the cathedral, St. Severin church and the Krämerbrücke. Located near the cathedral, it offers a view over the entire city after a sporty climb. The citadel is one of the largest and best preserved citadels of the baroque era. The extensive complex extends over 12 hectares and is star-shaped. In the past, it was intended to protect the city from attacks and was repeatedly used for military purposes for strategic reasons. Already in the 17th century it was considered impregnable. In the fortress there was everything the "inhabitants" needed, from bakeries and arsenals to kitchens and bedrooms. From 1963 onwards it was partially opened to the public. After extensive renovations in 1990, the fortress is now completely accessible. The area is used by various authorities, cultural institutions, the military history museum and even by residents of private homes. The outer railing is freely accessible at all times. It is recommended to visit the citadel with its "Horchgänge" as part of a guided tour.
