High above the rooftops of the city of Eisenach and a good hour from Erfurt is one of the most famous national monuments in the country. The Wartburg Castle has hosted many famous people, such as Martin Luther. Luther hid there in 1521/22 as Junker Jörg and translated the New Testament of the Bible into German. Another guest was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who repeatedly resided in the castle. In the course of history the Wartburg festival (1817) and the second Wartburg festival (1848) took place. Today the Wartburg is freely accessible and serves as a venue for events in addition to the museum. The permanent exhibition shows 130 objects from the Wartburg art collection. In addition to many cultural events, the historical Christmas market is held annually in Advent at Wartburg Castle, which enjoys great popularity nationwide.
