Schwellenburg

For all nature lovers an excursion to the nature reserve of the Schwellenburg is recommended. The approximately 22-hectare area is located in the districts of Tiefthal and Kühnhausen north of Erfurt. The mountain rises around 50 metres into the air and consists of a type of gypsum. The existing "steppe vegetation" is also special, resulting in a particularly warm climate and dry soil. This occurs very rarely in Central Europe. The "thresholds" or steps have been formed over the centuries by wine and woad cultivation as well as agriculture and lime mining. Despite the distinctive name, there has never been a castle on the mountain. Scientists merely assume that there was a settlement on the mountain in the Stone Age. Since 1939 the Schwellenburg with its surrounding area has been a protected area and may only be entered on foot. From spring to autumn a herd of goats lives on the mountain and changes its location every now and then. From the summit, excursionists can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Geratal valley north of Erfurt.
