Protestant Monastery of St. Augustine

The Protestant Augustinian monastery is over 700 years old, but after various destructions, rebuilding and alterations it has been able to preserve a large part of its historical building fabric. Already in 1277 Augustinian rites began with the construction of the monastery. Until 1518 the rooms of St. Catherine's Chapel, the chapter hall, the cloister, the nave, the church tower, the priory, the library and the woad houses were built. Even Martin Luther lived in the Augustinian monastery from 1505 - 1511. Today, special documents from his time are on display in the permanent exhibition "BIBLE-CLOSTER-LUTHER".

St. Augustine´s Church

The former St. Philippi and Jacobi church was in such a bad condition in 1276 that it was rebuilt by the Augustinian hermits to become an Augustinian church. Erfurt's oldest stained glass windows (700 years old) have special charm and will shine in new splendour after their restoration in 2014. Even Martin Luther has already seen the windows.

Kapitelsaal

The hall is one of the most impressive rooms of the whole monastery. It was used for meetings and is very bright due to the large windows. The high vaulted ceilings with their red stones and white walls underline the special feeling of the room. The hall is entered from the cloister.

Historical library

The library was used by the Augustinian hermits at that time as a workroom for transcriptions and was even extended due to the high volume of work in the 14th century. The collection comprises over 60,000 historical books and is thus one of the most important ecclesiastical book collections in Germany. In addition, there are around 13,000 manuscripts and prints dating from before 1850.

House of Reconsiliation

During a bombing raid on 25.02.1945 English bombers dropped air mines, which completely destroyed large parts of the monastery. Over 260 people died as a result of this attack. After the end of the Second World War the reconstruction of the monastery began according to the historical model by committed Erfurters. In the 2010s, the former library was replaced by a modern building that complements the rest of the ensemble.

Elisabeth chapel in the North Tower

The church St. Nikolai was first officially mentioned in 1212. The church tower was built in 1360/61. Due to the dilapidated state of construction, the nave was demolished in 1744, but the tower remained standing. The paintings of the Marian cycle from the 14th century are very worth seeing. It shows detailed stories of Saint Elisabeth.

Place of Silence

In the place of silence there is a special cross - the cross of nails from Coventry. This was handed over to the Augustinian monastery on 25.02.2008 on the occasion of laying the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the library. Coventry Cathedral was destroyed by German bombers during the Second World War.
