Heiligenberg Heidelberg

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg and walk in the footsteps of the past, Heiligenberg is the place to be. It is located opposite the Heidelberg Castle on the north bank of the Neckar and with its 440 m height cannot be overlooked.
Since the 5th century BC, the mountain has played a special role in the changing history of the Heidelberg region. Traces of this are still clearly visible today, firstly through the impressive monastery ruins of St. Michael and St. Stephen, and the "Thingstätte", a huge open-air stage from the time of National Socialism.
If you want to experience the mountain in all its facets, you should walk along the Celtic Trail. Here the name says it all and so you can discover numerous remains from Celtic, Roman and medieval times. Some of them have been preserved and restored.
The hiking trail leads past the Thingstätte and the two monastery ruins and on to the well preserved Celtic ring wall. Then follows the "Heidenloch", a shaft in the rock for water supply from the Middle Ages to the restored St. Stephen's Monastery.
The Philosophers' Path also runs along the southern slope of the mountain.
