Student karzer Heidelberg

The Studentenkarzer is the student prison of Heidelberg University. Since its foundation it has been one of its privileges to be able to administer justice to its members. Since 1886, however, this jurisdiction has been limited to disciplinary proceedings.
The prison was established around 1780 and was used from 1823 to 1914. Students were imprisoned for offences such as violent mensuration, disturbing the peace at night or other offences against public order.
The detention could last between 3 days and 4 weeks. Officially, the detainees were allowed to attend classes and perform their other duties as students, but only after they had been dealt with did they have to return to their cells.
Life in the detention cell was considered quite comfortable and so the detention was increasingly used to "skip" lectures. It was especially popular among students to immortalize themselves on the walls and ceilings of the carcass with paintings and poems. To this day, efforts are being made to conserve these legacies and preserve them for posterity.
