Denkmal der Göttinger Sieben

The monument of the Göttingen Seven was erected in front of the Lower Saxony Parliament to commemorate a historic event in German constitutional history. It honours the Göttingen Seven, seven professors who maintained their democratic attitude during the Hanoverian constitutional conflict at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover. When King Ernst August 1837 invalidated the liberal constitution by royal patent, the academics protested for the sake of intellectual freedom and were removed from office because of their resistance; moreover, three of them were even expelled from the country. Thus, the monument also stands for civil courage and as a reminder of civic duties as the main pillars of society.
