Maritime Museum at Castle Tower

The castle tower once formed the northern end of Düsseldorf Château, which was originally built as a simple castle on the banks of the Rhine by the sovereigns in 1288 after the rise of the city of Düsseldorf.
In the course of continuous expansion of the complex and its conversion into a stately palace, two mighty towers were also attached. After some war damage and a devastating fire in 1872, the decision was taken to demolish the ruins. According to a royal decision, only the castle tower was to remain in existence forever.  After another fire and a thorough restoration, the Düsseldorfer Schifffahrtmuseum was finally able to move into the old tower and has been welcoming its visitors here ever since.
