The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus is housed in the former villa of “painter prince” Franz von Lenbach.
It owes its reputation as a major international museum to its unique collection of works by “Der Blaue Reiter” (The Blue Rider) and of works of Wassily Kandinsky. Due to this and the building's renovation and extension by the international known architects Foster + Partners the Lenbachhaus is one of the must-see museums in Munich.
Other specializations of the collection encompass the nineteenth-century Munich school of painting and work groups by internationally significant contemporary artists.
