With the concentration camp memorial site, Dachau is the central European place of learning and remembrance, with around 1 Mio. visitors from all over the world every year.
In addition to the contemporary historical aspect, cultural life in Dachau plays an important role. The annual cultural program, including top-class Dachau Palace Concerts, the open-air Dachau Summer of Music Festival, street festivals and the Long Night of open Museums, Galleries and Studios, makes Dachau a lively city of art and culture on the outskirts of Munich. Customs are also cultivated. The traditional Dachau Folk Festival at the foot of the old town and the Dachau Christmas Market in front of the town hall are popular with locals and visitors alike.
Visible from afar, the picturesque old town of Dachau and the Electoral Palace of Dachau of the Wittelsbach dynasty are situated on a hill above the Amper River and the so called Dachauer Moos (mossy landscape). This charming natural landscape is a popular destination for hiking and biking. From the palace garden, visitors enjoy a unique view of the nearby state capital Munich and the Alps on the horizon.
The special light conditions in the Moos attracted many renowned painters of open-air painting to Dachau. At the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century one of the most important European artist colonies of that time was established in Dachau. Works from this period can be discovered on the Dachau Artists' Trail. Over a distance of just under 6 km, visitors take in the location of the artists and their motifs of the time at 18 painting stelae. The originals of most of these paintings can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the Dachau Picture Gallery.
