The Palace Square (Schlossplatz) is the heart of Stuttgart and houses a baroque garden, several fountains, the music pavilion and the 30 metre high anniversary column in honour of the 25th anniversary of the government of King Wilhelm I and his 60th birthday. On the occasion of the Federal "Gartenschau" in 1977, the square underwent a redesign and has remained in this form to the present day.
The square is bounded by the New Palace and its courtyard of honour, adjoining the Old Palace, the Old Chancellery with its Mercury Column, the art building of the Württembergischer Kunstverein and the Marquard Building. Directly opposite the New Palace, the late classicist Königsbau lines the west side of the square along Königsstraße. Directly behind it are the Königsbau-Passagen, an impressive shopping mall.
